When you think of Adventure or Active travel, do you imagine that to participate you must be a 25 year old fitness fanatic? Or do you imagine that you will be required to climb mountains or trek through the wilderness carrying everything you need on your back?

These trips are certainly available but the fact is that the average person who takes an adventure journey is 47 years old and in good health. Some trips actually require very little in the way of physical activity -  no more than you would expend in a typical day exploring the sites on any holiday. With many others, the more strenuous physical elements are optional. There is something to suit everyone from 18 to 90 and Some trips cater to families with young children.

The biggest difference is that these journeys take you into the life of the country or region you have chosen to explore, to meet and travel with it’s people. Modes of transportation are chosen based on what locals most often use -  trains and buses, with the occasional rickshaw, elephant or camel where appropriate. Accommodation is as representative as possible of the destination and could include village houses, desert camps, monastery hostels, and simple – but clean – local hotels.

If you want just enough organization to remove time-wasting hassles but freedom to enjoy the sort of ‘street-level’ travel experience that can be tough at times but ultimately rewarding, this could be for you. Just remember to bring your sense of humor and patience as things don’t always go as smoothly in other areas of the world as we have come to expect in North America - - let that be part of the fun!

COSTA RICA

In Costa Rica the visitor can enjoy lovely tropical beaches, the grandest adventures, the wonders of nature, scintillating culture, all the necessary components of an ideal vacation.

Costa Rica is a land of Volcanoes, rain forests, waterfalls, and rivers. Adventure travelers can choose from a variety of activities such as rafting, snorkeling, diving, kayaking, surfing and lots more.

Considered one of the most bio-diverse regions in the world, Costa Rica is divided in 20 natural parks and 8 biological reserves. The variety of activities includes horseback riding, hiking mountain paths in cloud forests and guided bird watching tours. Tortuguero National Park is especially famous for sea turtle nesting that takes place every year, and natural canals that abound with protected species such as crocodiles, manatees and otters.
